Knoff Tosses No-Hitter LBSU Collects Two Victories over Canisius; Improves to 22-7
March 17, 2004 LONG BEACH, CA -- Junior pitcher Lindsey Knoff, of the Long Beach State softball team, threw her first career no-hitter in a 7-0 victory over Canisius College on Wednesday at the 49er Softball Complex. The 49ers also defeated the Griffs, 1-0 in the first game of the double header.
Knoff's no-hitter is 14th no-hitter in program history, and first since Meredith Cervenka tossed a no-no at UC Santa Barbara on May 4 last season. Knoff (5-2) also recorded four strikeouts.
The 49ers broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the second inning with three runs. A Melanie McCauley single drove home Roxanne Staniorski, who reached on a fielder's choice. After Cassie Preece grounded out to second base, Colleen Burdick connected for a two-out RBI single that scored McCauley and Lindsay Marksbury.
Long Beach State added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Burdick collected her third RBI of the game after hitting a single that scored Marksbury, who led off the inning with a walk. Arleigh Thorp connected for her second triple of the season, and in the process drove home Lauren Johnson and Burdick.
Thorp went 4-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while Burdick went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.
In the first game of the double-header, LBSU topped Canisius, 1-0. Long Beach State scored its lone run in the bottom of the first inning, courtesy of a Jamie Farnworth RBI double that scored Thorp, who reached base on a walk.
That was all Meredith Cervenka (8-3) needed, as she went 7.0 innings, allowing just three hits and registering nine strikeouts. Farnworth went 2-for-3 with two doubles.
Long Beach State (22-7) travels to Sacramento State for the Capital Classic, March 19-21.
