49ers Defeat Hawai'i, 6-1 Beach Improves To 3-5 With Victory
February 29, 2004 HONOLULU, HI-- The 49er women's tennis team improved to 3-5 on the season with a 6-1 win over the University of Hawai'i on Sunday afternoon. The 49ers, who are ranked No. 65 in the country, won all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point and then came back to win five of the six singles matches. Hawai'i falls to 5-5 with the loss.
The 49ers began the day by sweeping all three doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, the 49er duo of Nicole Bouffler and Sandra Rocha won 8-5 over Lauren Fitzgerald and Paige Mainor. Kelly Chan and Alanah Carroll won at No. 2 doubles 8-4 over Justine Boutet and Sylvia Jaros. At No. 3 doubles, Claudia Argumedo and Emmanuelle Tabatruong won 8-2 over Kimberly Curtis and Renata Camargo.
In singles play the 49ers won five of the six matches in straight sets. In the featured match at No. 1 singles, Bouffler came away with a tough 7-6, 2-6, 6-3 win over Fitzgerald. Tabatruong improved to 2-0 in singles play with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles over Curtis and at No. 6 singles Argumedo defeated Cappella 7-6, 6-2.
