LBSU Wins Home Opener over Michigan, 8-5 Garcia, Gordin, Wawrzynski Score Two Goals Each
February 26, 2004 LONG BEACH, CA – The No. 4-ranked Long Beach State women's water polo team defeated the University of Michigan, 8-5, in a non-conference match at the Campus Pool on Thursday afternoon.
Long Beach State improved to 6-1, while Michigan fell to 10-4.
Juniors, Drew Wawrzynski and Robyn Gordin, and senior Angelica Garcia netted two goals each for the 49ers in their home opener. Alison Braden and Jessica Levin added the two other LBSU goals. Goalie Bri Hawkins stopped nine shots on goal for The Beach. Shanna Welch registered two goals for the Wolverines in the losing effort. UM goalie, Betsy Armstrong tallied 13 saves.
Michigan rallied from a 3-2 deficit in the second period after consecutive goals by Meg Knudsten and Sheetal Narsai to take a 4-3 lead at half time.
Long Beach State rallied for two goals in the third period, courtesy of Garcia and Gordin to take a 5-4 lead into the fourth period. Wawrzynski's goal at 5:48 put LBSU up 6-4, followed by goals at 4:45 (Levin) and 4:00 (Wawrzynski) to make the score 8-4.
