49ers Host Southland Foes This Weekend CS Fullerton And UC Irvine Come To Town
PDF VERSION OF THIS RELEASE February 11, 2004 The Records: The Long Beach State women's tennis team will host CS Fullerton and UC Irvine at the 49er Campus Courts this weekend. The 49ers, who are 0-3 on the young season, are ranked No. 61 in the nation in the latest ITA Rankings (2/10). All three losses have come to teams ranked in the top 50 in the nation. CS Fullerton is 3-2 on the season. The titans defeated Idaho State (7-0) last week and lost to UCSB (5-2). UC Irvine, which comes into the weekend ranked No. 65 in the nation, is 2-1 on the campaign. Last weekend the Anteaters were in Hawai'i where they defeated Hawai'i (4-3) and Hawai'i Pacific (6-1). They play at UCLA on Thursday before facing the 49ers on Sunday.
The Coach: Jenny Hilt-Costello (UCLA, 1994) is 83-59 (.585) in her seventh year as the head coach at Long Beach State. Hilt-Costello has led the 49ers to three consecutive appearances in the Big West Tournament Championship match, winning the crown in 2002.
The Series: The 49ers lead in their series with CS Fullerton by a 23-14 count. Last year the 49ers won at Fullerton by a 7-0 score. Long Beach has won its last nine meetings against the Titans. The 49ers trail in their series with UC Irvine by a 28-9 count. Last year the 49ers defeated the Anteaters twice, winning 6-1 in the regular season at UCI and then defeating them 4-1 in the semi-finals of the Big West Tournament. The 49ers have won three in a row over UCI and have eliminated the Anteaters from the Big West Tournament the last two years.
Playing The Best: Of the 22 NCAA Division I programs on the 2004 49er spring schedule, 13 are currently ranked in the Top 75 by ITA Tennis. The first three 49er opponents were all ranked (USC No. 6, Pepperdine No. 42, San Diego State No. 28). Also on the docket this season are UC Irvine (No. 65), Sacramento State (No. 53), Michigan (No. 25), UC Riverside (T-No. 75), Loyola Marymount (No. 63), Marshall (No. 72), Utah (T-No.75), Nebraska (No. 71), Cal Poly (No. 56) and Oregon (No. 42). Seven of those matches will be played at home at the 49er Campus Courts.
Beach Hangs Tough With SDSU: In its last match, on January 31 in San Diego, the 49ers fell to San Diego State 5-2. Winning for The Beach were Nicole Bouffler and Claudia Argumedo in singles play. Bouffler, playing at the No. 1 spot, defeated Katalina Romero 7-5, 6-2, while Argumedo, playing at No. 6, won 6-1, 6-2 over Sarah Sansom. The 49ers also got strong performances from Lindsey Marvel, Kelly Chan and Alanah Carroll. Marvel fell 6-2, 3-6, 4-6 to Dita Hauerlandova at No. 2 singles, Chan lost 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 4 spot to Patricia Graf and Carroll lost at #5 singles 6-4, 7-5 to Alesya Virov.
Bouffler Shines At No. 1: Junior Nicole Bouffler (Orange, NSW, Australia) is off to a 1-2 start in singles play this spring at the No. 1 spot, but has played extremely competitive in each match. Her victory came against San Diego State's Katalina Romero, 7-5, 6-2. She fell to Natalie Braverman of Pepperdine, 5-7, 7-6 (6) and 2-10. Braverman is ranked No. 67 in the nation. In the opener at USC she lost to Carine Vermeulen 7-5, 6-4. In the fall, Bouffler compiled a 9-2 singles mark. She won the singles title at the USD/SDSU Invitational, defeating SDSU's Dita Hauerlandora in the final, 6-2, 6-4. She also advanced to the semifinals of the CSUF Fall Intercollegiates before falling to Pepperdine's Karin Schlapbach, 6-4, 6-2. Bouffler transferred to LBSU in the fall from Texas-San Antonio.
Day Out For Season: The 49ers got some bad news over the semester break when freshman Tammy Day (Pretoria, South Africa) suffered an ankle injury (torn ligaments). She will miss the entire spring season. Day was 3-4 in the fall in singles play, but she had teamed with Nicole Bouffler in doubles and the duo went 7-1, earning a national ranking (No. 46) and winning the doubles championships at the CSUF Fall Intercollegiates and the USD/SDSU Invitational.
