Beach Solid in Season Opener

49ers Have Solid Opener in Santa Barbara SANTA BARBARA, CA--The Beach cross country team opened up their season at the UCSB Triangular with a solid performance. The men's and women's team faced conference rivals UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly SLO. Both the men's and women's squads finished in third place for the meet. Freshman Nicole Blalock (Orange) led the women's team with a seventh place finish overall. Blalock's time of 18:13 was a personal-best, as well as a freshman-class record, and just missed the LBSU all-time top-ten by one second. The Beach also saw a personal best from senior Sharon Burnett (Springfield, OR) with a time of 19:18, fnishing 25th overall. The women's team looked strong despite the absence of three of the team's top-five runners; Diane Mendoza (Cerritos), Jennifer Yadon (Lancaster), and newcomer Crystal Roethlisberger (Tulare). On the men's side, several 49ers recorded personal bests. Terrance Wroblewski (Half Moon Bay) led the men with a personal-best time of 25:42, finishing in 20th place overall. Jake Kruczynski (Pacifica) ran a personal-best of 26:13, and Daniel Estrella dropped his personal-best to 26:19. Distance coach Geoff Masasnet was pleased with the finish of the top-five runners on the men's team, as they finished within 40 seconds of each other. "Our plan was to run a controlled, team race, and set the groundwork for the next eight weeks," said Masanet. "Santa Barbara and Cal Poly are nationally ranked teams and this meet gave us the opportunity to see how we stack up and how hard we will need to work to make a strong push for a high conference finish," added Masasnet. The Beach cross country team will next be in action when they travel to Riverside to compete in the UC Riverside Invitational on September 20.
