CERVENKA EARNS FOURTH STRAIGHT BIG WEST PITCHER OF THE WEEK Lauren Johnson Collects the Conference Co-Player of the Week
IRVINE, CA -- Sophomores Meredith Cervenka and Lauren Johnson, of the Long Beach State softball team, were announced as the Pitcher and Co-Player of the Week, respectively, for the period ending May 12, as announced by the league office on Monday. This is Cervenka's fourth straight Pitcher of the Week honor.
Cervenka (La Crescenta, CA) went 4-0 with a 0.29 ERA versus Utah State and Cal State Northridge last week. She helped Long Beach State cruise to easy victories over Utah State earlier last week, giving up a combined three hits in two starts. In fact, Cervenka almost pitched her second no-hitter of the season at USU on Tuesday, as she gave up one hit to the second to last batter of the game.
Cervenka would shut down the Matadors of CS Northridge, allowing just one run in two starts. Cervenka finished conference play with an 11-0 record and a 0.20 ERA. She has won 13 straight decisions to improve her overall record to 15-8, and lowered her ERA to a conference best 1.16. Cervenka pitched 36 consecutive scoreless innings, and has only given up three runs in her last 71 innings.
Johnson (Norwalk, CA), earned Co-Player of the Week honors (with CS Fullerton's Jenny Topping) after going 10-for-18 with 10 runs, six RBI, five doubles, and one home run. This was her first Player of the Week distinction.
Johnson tied a school record with four runs scored in a single game at Utah State on May 6. Johnson helped Long Beach State break a school record for doubles in a season (68) with five on the week, including two at Utah State and two versus Northridge. She is batting .267 for the season, with 26 runs and 10 doubles.
The 49ers travel to Fresno State for the 2003 NCAA Softball Playoffs, on May 15 at 10:00 a.m.
