IRVINE, CA-- The Big West Conference announced its 2003 all-league squads on Tuesday. Long Beach State had three players who earned all-conference accolades. Junior Alena Kovalchuk was named first team in singles, Laura Thomas was second team in singles and Lindsey Marvel was honorable mention in singles. The duo of Kovalchuk and Marvel were voted first team all-league in doubles. UCSB's Uzma Khan was selected as the Big West Player of the Year and Cal Poly's Hugh Bream was voted the Coach of the Year.
Khan became the fourth UCSB player to earn conference Player of the Year honors. Khan posted a 24-0 dual record as the No. 1 singles player for the Gauchos this year. She defeated three of the other members of this year's All-Big West first team in head-to-head competition five times, beating Tereza Simonyan (CSUN) and Danielle Hustedt (Cal Poly) twice and LBSU's Kovalchuk once.
Bream led Cal Poly to its first Big West women's tennis title this season. The Mustangs finished the regular season with a 20-6 record, which includes victories over ranked opponents in Arkansas, Long Beach State, UCSB and CS Northridge. Cal Poly will compete in the NCAA Championships on May 9 when they take on #31-ranked Georgia Tech in first round action.
