Four Niners Named All-MPSF Stewart a First Teamer, Garcia on Third Team, Richardson and Azevedo HM
WOODLAND, CA-- With one clean sprint, Long Beach State women's water polo doubled its total number of all-conference selections, earning four this season, after garnering just four in the program's first five years. Sophomore Roberta Stewart (Auckland, NZ) was named a first teamer for the second straight season, while junior Angelica Garica (Catano, PR) followed up an honorable mention selection last season, with a third team honor in 2003. Senior captain Ashley Richardson (San Diego) was named honorable mention for the second time in her career (2001, 2003), while freshman Cassie Azevedo (Long Beach/Wilson HS) was also an honorable mention selection. "I am really proud of the fact that this program was recognized with four players on the all-conference team," said fourth-year Head Coach Rick Azevedo. "It just shows how balanced we were this season. The fun part is that we will return three of those four next season." Prior to this season, LBSU had two all-MPSF selections in 2002 and one in 2001 and another in 1999. This year, the No. 4-ranked 49ers tallied its most successful season ever, going 24-8 and tying for third in the MPSF with an 8-2 mark. Stewart led The Beach with 48 goals, ninth-best in a single season, while Azevedo finished second on the 49ers with 39 goals. Garcia tallied 38, while Richardson finished her four-year career with a school-record 184 goals. COMPLETE TEAM (PDF)
