49ers Race Through Honolulu Unblemished Hawkins Named Most Outstanding Player; Garcia All-Tournament
HONOLULU - The No. 4-ranked 49ers (16-5) return home from its trip to Hawaii, unblemished, as goalie Bri Hawkins was named the Rainbow Challenge's Most Outstanding Player, while Angelica Garcia was named to the all-tournament team. The Beach tied Australia for the second straight time, 8-8, on Sunday to close out the four-day trip to the Big Island, which began with a conference win over Hawaii, three wins over four-year institutions, a win over New Zealand and two ties to Australia. Hawkins, who recorded a tournament-high 14 saves against New Zealand, tallied 50 saves in the tournament, as The Beach went 4-0-2. The six teams combined for just 28 goals, including three twice and a low of two from UC Santa Cruz. Garcia had nine goals in the team's six games. On Sunday, for the second time in the tournament, Long Beach State and Australia played to a tie. This time, 8-8. Amy Hetzel's single-game tournament record fifth goal with 2:49 remaining in the match, secured the 8-8 tie for the Aussies. Hetzel scored in each period, including two in the third.
