Beach Unbeaten After First Day
Garcia Tallies Five, Azevedo Four in Two Wins and a Tie
HONOLULU - The No. 4-ranked 49ers (15-5) picked up two wins and a tie on the first day of the Rainbow Challenge, as Angelica Garcia had five goals on the day and Cassie Azevedo added four. The Beach defeated UC Santa Cruz 15-2, took care of UC San Diego 8-6 and then tied Australia 6-6. Hawaii, Canada, Long Beach State and Australia all remained unbeaten after the first day's competition. In the team's first game, The Beach scored five first quarter goals en route to a 15-2 victory. LBSU built a 15-0 lead before the Banana Slugs posted two late goals with under a minute to play. Ten different 49ers scored in the match led by Laura Branch's three. Bri Hawkins recorded 11 saves in the net. Against UCSD, the 49ers rallied with a four-goal third quarter for an 8-6 victory over UC San Diego. The Beach scored two late goals in the third, one each by Alison Braden and Angelica Garcia to take a 6-5 lead. Azevedo scored with :32 remaining in the match to clinch the 49er victory. Garcia and Azevedo had two goals a piece. In a tightly contested match, Australia and Long Beach State played to a 6-6 tie. The Beach scored three first quarter goals, including two by Garcia, to take an early 3-1 lead. But Australia responded with two goals in the second, one each by Amity Campbell and Melissa McDonald. With under a minute left in regulation, each team's goalkeeper came up with big saves to secure the tie. Garcia and Roberta Stewart led The Beach with two goals each.
