BLALOCK, WROBLEWSKI NAMED ALL-CONFERENCE SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA-- Freshman Nicole Blalock (Orange) and junior Terrance Wrobleski (Half Moon Bay) led The Beach at the Big West Cross Country Championships on Saturday at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, earning All-Conference honors, as the women's team finished sixth (137 points) , and the men's team finished seventh (164 points). Blalock became the first freshman in 20 years to earn All-Conference honors after finishing 7th overall with a time of 23:08.6. It was the third time in three years that the women's team has had an All-Conference honoree (Yadon, 4th in 2002 and Palacio, 10th in 2001). She was also the top freshman finisher of any school in the race. Wroblewski became the first male 49er in 13 years to earn All-Conference honors, finishing 10th overall with a time of 25:56.6. The women's team moved up three spots from their finish in 2002 (9th) to finish 6th and had a substantial point spread between the final four teams in the race. The women's score of 137 points was the lowest point total in nearly ten years. "I'm pretty excited about how well our girls ran," said Distance Coach Geoff Masanet. "Our top-five ran great and really moved us up in the final point standings," Masanet added. Junior Jennifer Yadon (Lancaster) had a solid race to finish 18th with a time of 23:38.2. Last season, Yadon finished fourth overall and went on to earn All-Conference and All-Region honors. Junior Crystal Roethlisberger (Tulare) also ran a great race, finishing 33rd with a time of 24:07.4. The men's team had a disappointing race to finish 7th overall. "The race got out in front of us and we couldn't move up to set ourselves up for a top finish," said Masanet. "Now we just have to regroup and prepare for regionals. We are better then we ran today, and we will just have to prove it at regionals," Masanet added. Senior Brian Stehmeier (Running Springs) ran a hard race but struggled after an exhausting week for he and his family. Firefighters fought off flames on three separate occasions to save his family's house in the wildfires this past week. The strain of the fires took its toll on Stehmeier as he finished 42nd with a time of 27:23.2. Freshman Wolhan Ovalle (Vacaville) and junior Jake Kruczynski (Pacifica) ran well to finish 35th (27:05. 6) and 36th (27:07.5) respectively, as the number two and number three runners for the men's team. The 49er cross country team will next be in action November 15th at the NCAA West Regionals in Portland, OR. Women's Team Results: 1. UC Santa Barbara (27 points) 2. Utah State (66 points) 3.
