Freshmen Lead Beach to Victory over LMU
LONG BEACH, CA-- Freshman Roberta Stewarts (Auckland, NZ) skip shot with nine seconds left in the second overtime lifted No. 5-ranked Long Beach State (12-9) to 7-6 victory over No. 7-ranked Loyola Marymount (17-6) in non-conference womens water polo match on Thursday afternoon.
Bri Hawkins (San Diego) added 16 saves-- one short of the school-record set last week by the freshman-- as the goalie held the Lions without a goal for 10:23.
The Lions had led 5-4 at the half on Christina Radvanyis goal with 13 seconds left in the second period, only to be held scoreless until the second overtime, when Teressa Guidi connected on a goal with 1:50 left to tie the game at 6-6.
Angelica Garcia (Cantano, Puerto Rico) finished with four goals for The Beach, including the game tying shot with 1:26 left in regulation, at 5-5, and a go-ahead goal at 2:27 in the first overtime to give LBSU a 6-5 advantage.
LMU goalie Devon Courtney (Soquel, CA) kept the game close, finishing the contest with seven saves. Courtney stopped two shots in the fourth period, one on Garcia at 4:15 and another on Ashley Richardsons penalty shot at 3:12 to keep LMU up 5-4. Courtney also picked up a save in the second overtime off of Garcia miss with 45 seconds left.
