Beach Have Won Six of Eight
Record: 9-7, 2-3 MPSF Ranking: 7th 49ers Host SJSU This Friday: The No. 7-ranked 49ers (9-7, 2-3 MPSF), winners of six of their last eight, will host San Jose State (11-6, 3-3 MPSF) in a conference matchup on Friday at the campus pool at 4 p.m. The Beach will then travel to Northern California for three games next week.
Recent Happenings: In Honolulu on March 22, LBSU defeated No. 9-ranked Hawaii 8-5, defeating the Wahine for the second time this season. Angelica Garica had three goals, while Amanda Wightman had five saves. Previously, the 49ers up-ended No. 15-ranked Princeton 9-2 on March 19 behind three goals from Angelica Garica and a career-best 10 saves from Bri Hawkins. On March 10, in the longest match in school-history, Roberta Stewart's goal with 35 seconds left (42:25 from the start) gave The Beach a 10-9 victory over UC San Diego in the third sudden death period.
Head Coach: Ricardo Azevedo is in his third season with The Beach with a 43-43 mark. Azevedo also coaches the 49er men's team. Azevedo is also an assistant with the Men's National Team.
Rank and File: The 49ers remained at No. 7 in the latest Coaches Poll LBSU's highest rankings (season and in school history) came on March 1, 2001 when the team was ranked No. 5. The MPSF is considered the toughest conference in the country, with nine of the top-10 teams in the MPSF.
Garcia is This Week's Best: Sophomore Angelica Garcia (Cantano, Puerto Rico) was named the MPSF Mikasa Player of the Week after tallying six goals in two victories for The Beach. Garcia is second in goals scored (27) and shooting percentage (39%). This is the second honor for Garcia.
Rich in Points: Junior Ashley Richardson (San Diego) is second on the team with 27 goals, scoring six over her last three contests. Richardson has a team-best 16 assists and team-leading 47% shooting percentage. More importantly, Richardson has a team-best 41 earned ejections, which equates to 41 times on the season that The Beach has had a "power play" against the opposition. She is second on the team with 15 steals. Stealing Them Away: Freshman Roberta Stewart (Auckland, NZ) leads the team with 29 goals and 16 steals on the season. Stewart is hitting 30% of her shots, third on the team.
Goalies Battling for Playing Time: Three goalies have started for The Beach this season. Senior Amanda Wightman (San Diego, CA) has 543 saves in her career, adding to her school-record which was broken during the 2001 season; Candice Chick, who is second all-time in saves with 237, has started in three contests this season, while Bri Hawkins has compiled 33 saves in four starts.
Top Recruits: Utility Roberta Stewart (Auckland, NZ), 2-Meter Drue Wawrzynski (Garden Grove, CA) and goalie Bri Hawkins (San Diego, CA) enter their first year at LBSU. Stewart is a member of the N2 New Zealand National team while Drue is the third Wawrzynski to play for The Beach following in the footsteps of her father and brother. Goalie Bri Hawkins is an all-CIF pick out of Mt. Carmel HS. All three carry international experience to go along with current Niners Richardson and Garcia. |
