No. 7 Coming Off Nine Day Layoff

Princeton, Hawaii On Deck: The No. 7-ranked 49ers (7-7, 1-3 MPSF), after taking nine days off, will host Princeton (11-5) on Tuesday at 4 p.m., before returning to MPSF action on Friday at No. 9-ranked Hawaii (8-7, 2-4 MPSF). The Beach have already played the Wahine once this year, defeating them 6-2.
Other Recent Happenings: On March 10, in the longest match in school-history, Roberta Stewarts goal with 35 seconds left (42:25 from the start) gave The Beach a 10-9 victory over UC San Diego in the third sudden death period. On March 9, the 49ers held No. 2-ranked UCLA at bay with a 3-1 lead before halftime, only to see the Bruins come back and win 6-4. On March 8, LBSU picked up their first MPSF win with a 9-6 victory over UC Santa Barbara.
Head Coach: Ricardo Azevedo is in his third season with The Beach with a 41-43 mark. Azevedo also coaches the 49er mens team. Azevedo is also an assistant with the Mens National Team. Rank and File: The 49ers moved up a spot to No. 7 in the latest Coaches Poll LBSUs highest rankings (season and in school history) came on March 1, 2001 when the team was ranked No. 5. The MPSF is considered the toughest conference in the country, with nine of the top-10 teams in the MPSF.
Kiwi Flourishes in Long Beach: Freshman Roberta Stewart (Auckland, NZ) has made an immediate impact for The Beach this season. Stewart leads the team with 27 goals, having led the team in scoring nine times.
On a Tear: Junior Ashley Richardson (San Diego) has been on a tear as of late, scoring 13 over the last six contests, including five against Michigan on February 26. She currently has 23 goals on the season. Muy Bueno!: Sophomore Angelica Garcia (Cantano, Puerto Rico) has found the back of the net in each of the last nine contests. On the season, Garcia has 21 goals, third on the team.
Black is Back: Senior Stacy Black (Los Alamitos, CA) the school-record holder with 152 goals returns for her senior season after redshirting in 2001. Black, the teams captain, was a third team All-American in 2000. Black has scored eight goals in 2001.
Goalies Battling for Playing Time: Three goalies have started for The Beach this season. Senior Amanda Wightman (San Diego, CA) has 538 saves in her career, adding to her school-record which was broken during the 2001 season; Candice Chick, who is second all-time in saves with 237, has started three contests this season, while Bri Hawkins has compiled 23 saves, starting the last three.
Top Recruits: Utility Roberta Stewart (Auckland, NZ), 2-Meter Drue Wawrzynski (Garden Grove, CA) and goalie Bri Hawkins (San Diego, CA) enter their first year at LBSU. Stewart is a member of the N2 New Zealand National team while Drue is the third Wawrzynski to play for The Beach following in the footsteps of her father and brother. Goalie Bri Hawkins is an all-CIF pick out of Mt. Carmel HS. All three carry international experience to go along with current Niners Richardson and Garcia. |
