Ashley Richardson Scores 5 Goals
LONG BEACH, CA -- LONG BEACH, CA -- Junior Ashley Richardson (San Diego) scored a career-high tying 5 goals and Angelica Garcia (Catano, Puerto Rico) and Drue Wawrzynski (Garden Grove) both added 2 goals apiece to lead the #7-ranked Long Beach State womens water polo team to an 11-8 win over the University of Michigan on Tuesday afternoon at the 49er Campus Pool. With the win the 49ers improve to 5-5 on the year, while Michigan falls to 5-8.
The 49ers jumped to a quick 3-1 lead in the first quarter as Richardson scored twice (4:40, 0:50) for the 49ers. Garcia got the 49ers on the scoreboard first at 5:17, followed by Richardsons first goal at 4:40. In the second quarter the 49ers scored three goals in the first 2:44 of the quarter, with Richardson finding the back of the net twice (4:49, 4:16). Michigan countered with two goals to pull to within 6-3, but Stacy Black scored just before the half at 0:22, giving the 49ers a 7-3 halftime lead.
In the third quarter goals by Roberta Stewart (3:56) and Richardson (3:23) gave Long Beach a commanding 9-3 lead.
Michigan made a run in the fourth quarter, outscoring the 49ers 5-2. Julie Nisbet (6:07) and Emily Pelino (5:00) scored for the Wolverines to cut the deficit to 9-5. After Wawrzynskis second goal at 3:47, Michigan came back with two more scores. Erin Browns second goal of the game, at 1:28, cut the margin to 10-7. Garcia was able to score the next trip down the pool to provide Long Beach with its 11th goal of the day.
In goal, 49er Candice Chick (Huntington Beach) recorded 6 goalie saves, while her counterpart, Betsey Armstrong, had 8 saves.
The 49ers will next be in action on Sunday, March 3 when they host San Diego State at 12:00 pm at the Campus Pool.
