Sythe Inks 18 Recruits Nine Women, and Nine Men Sign on For Fall, Spring August 15, 2001
LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State head track and field coach Andy Sythe announced written committments from 18 student-athletes today, which included nine men and nine women.
For the men, four athletes are Division-I transfers, Shaun Anderson (Penn State), Anthony Colson (CS Northridge), Jamaal James (Nichols State) and Cory Loebl (Clackamas CC), while five other athletes will be true freshmen. James was an all-Southland Conference runner in the 400m, Colson was All-Big Sky in the triple and long jumps, while Anderson was a member of the 1999 Big-10 Championship Team at Penn State. Loebl was the Northwest State JUCO Champion in the hammer throw. Amongst incoming freshmen, Matt Bates (Los Gatos, CA) ranked #2 in the state in the 1600m, Chaka Cofie (San Jose, CA) was a state meet qualifier in the long jump, Maurice Dosty (Stockton, CA) was a state qualifier in the 100m and 200m, Arturo Garcia (Chino, CA) was a three-time state qualifier in cross country, Steve Holland (Whittier, CA) was the CIF champion in the shot put and Tyson Jamerson (Rialto, CA) was had the fourth best mark in the state long jump championships. On the women's side, two are college transfers, Sharon Burnett (Portland State) and Shannon Daniels (Citrus College, Syracuse), and seven are incoming freshmen out of high school. Burnett ran a 2:12 in the 800m at the University of Washington Outdoors, while Daniels was a JUCO State Meet runner-up in the hammer throw. Melissa Brown (Pasadena, CA) was a state qualifier in the triple jump, Charlene Deardorff (San Jose, CA) placed third at the CIF Central Coast Sectional 100m, Emily Forsythe (LaCresenta, CA) place fifth in the state high jump, Holly Lipscomb (El Segundo, CA) competed at state triple jump champinships, Betsey Lively (Caneyville, KY) ranked #2 in the state of Kentucky int he 1600m, Jaclyn Pederson qualified for the state meets in the 1600m and cross country meets, and Michelle Pequignot placed fifth in the discus and ninth in the shot put at state meet.
