Palacio, Durham Top Finishers at Regionals
Sophomores Finish 67th and 73rd, Respectively November 10, 2001
TUCSON, AZ-- Sophomores Aaron Durham (Long Beach, CA/Wilson HS) and Drea Palacio (Fresno, CA) were the top finishers for Long Beach State at the NCAA Regional Cross Country meet, as Durham finished 73rd with a time of 33:54.50 on the 10-kilometer course, while Palacio was 67th on the 6-kilometer course with a time of 23:42.50. The men's team finished in 15th place (115 points), tying them for their highest finish in a decade, while the women's team finished in 17th place with 144 points. Palacio moved up 25 spots from last year's 92nd place finish. The men's team have twice finished in 15th place at the NCAA Regionals since 1991, in 1996 and 1994. Running in their first 10-kilometer races in college, freshman Arturo Garcia (Chino, CA), finished in 76th place with a time of 34:03.20, while fellow frosh Matt Bates (Los Gatos, CA) was 89th with a time of 34:19.10. Two juniors followed Palacio on the women's side, as Sharon Burnett (Springfield, OR) finished 88th with a time of 24:16.10, while Molly Roche (Arleta, CA) finished 117th with a time of 24:56.80. Stanford University took both the men's and women's team titles, as Arizona's Tara Chaplin, running on her home course, (20:40.10) won the women's race and Cardinal Donald Sage (30:43.40) won the men's event.
