Pre-Season 2006: Rated as the 33rd-best prospect for the 2006 amateur draft by Baseball America in the fall... he made the initial watch list for the Wallace National Player of the Year.

MLB/Summer League: Drafted in the 16th round by the Devils Rays in 2003... named a second team Summer All-American by Baseball America following a perfect 7-0 record and 1.62 in the Cape Cod League... led the league in wins and ranked seventh in ERA, making seven starts over eight games going 50.0 innings, giving up 37 hits and producing a .207 opponent batting average... struck out 54 and walked just 11... best outing came on June 26 when he took a perfect game into the ninth inning and finished with a two-hitter behind 12 strikeouts, earning Pitcher of the Week honors... had given up just three earned runs over his first five starts, for an 0.77 ERA... named to the East League All-Star with Dirtbag and Chatham teammate Evan Longoria.

2005 (Sophomore): As the team's Sunday starter, went 8-3 with a 2.83 ERA to earn second team All-Big West honors... appeared in 15 games with 14 starts, hurling 89 innings and giving up 67 hits... struck out 87 and walked just 23 and hit a single-season record 19 batters... the 49ers led the nation in ERA (2.53), producing the lowest 49er ERA since 1956, as Hughes pitched behind first round pick Cesar Ramos and fellow draftee Marco Estrada... also had two complete games and one shutout... ranked seventh in the Big West in ERA, sixth in wins, and seventh in strikeouts... opponents batted just .212 against him, third-best in the league.... struck out seven or better seven times, including five of his last seven starts... Big West Pitcher of the Week on April 11 after his best outing was a two-hit shutout at UC Irvine that The Beach won 10-0, as Hughes struck out 10 and walked none... let just two balls out of the infield, a flyball in the fourth and a high chopping single in the ninth... fired off his first-ever complete game two starts prior against top-ranked CS Fullerton on March 26, with a four-hit, one-run gem, as the 49ers won the series with the Titans... the game was the start of six in a row won by the righthander... retired seven and 13 in a row over 7.0 innings against UC Riverside on April 3... produced an 0.95 ERA from March 26 to April 24, running up a scoreless inning streak of 20.2 consecutive innings, which included, in part, the shutout over UCI and 6.2 shutout innings against CS Northridge... went 7-0 over eight starts ending on May 15, producing a 1.33 ERA.

Prior to LBSU: Started six times for Santa Clara as a freshman with a 4.79 ERA and 0-1 record… tossed 20.2 innings, giving up 21 hits… walked 13 and struck out 12… had a .269 opponent average.

High School: Compiled a 14-9 career record, advancing to the CIF quarterfinals during his sophomore year… led the team to the finals as a junior and the semi-finals as a senior… had a 5-0 record in the CIF playoffs.. prep All-America honors as a senior… ranked as the top prospect in multiple area code games, the ABA tournament and the Perfect GMC Wood bat league.. played against Japan in the Goodwill Games in 2002.

Personal: Son of Bill and Barbara Hughes… grandfather played baseball at North Carolina and in the Dodgers organization… logged over 50 hours of Christian service in high school... majoring in economics.
