Tim McDonnell
- Title:
- Assistant Coach
Tim McDonnell enters his third year with the Dirtbag program, as he was promoted to a full time assistant and hitting coach in the Fall, 2005. McDonnell will continue to work with the outfielders and play an integral part in the recruiting process, as he did as the volunteer assistant. In his previous two seasons, the Dirtbags produced back-to-back 40 win seasons and hosted two straight playoff series. During this time six position players have been drafted, including second round pick John Bowker by the Giants.
During the 2001 and 2002 seasons he was the top assistant at Orange Coast College, responsible for hitters, infielders and recruiting. While at OCC, the team produced back-to-back playoff berths, and advanced to the Super Regional in 2002. In 2002 his hitters hit .330 with 119 doubles and 61 home runs, both school records. OCC had eight players drafted; four in the top seven rounds, including current major leaguer and Royal Donnie Murphy. In 2000, McDonnell served on the staff at CS Fullerton, who advanced to the NCAA Regional.
McDonnell spent five years playing professionally from 1993-1998, finishing with a career .307 average, which included a 1995 Frontier League Championship and playoff MVP honors. McDonnell began his collegiate career at Chaffey College (1988-89) for his lifetime mentor, Head Coach Howard Lowder. He followed that up with a stop at UC Irvine, where he earned honorable mention All-Big West honors (1992) for Head Coach Mike Gerakos. After UCI dropped its program, McDonnell fought through an injury plagued senior season at CS Fullerton (1993) for Augie Garrido.
In 2003, McDonnell self-published a book, “The Process, Becoming a College or Professional Baseball Prospect”, directed at helping young players reach their potential as baseball players. www.theprocessbaseball.com. Tim (35) is single and resides in Westminster, CA. He earned a degree from UCI in social ecology degree in 1994..
