Cherrie Cox scores twice to reach 10 goals on the season as Amaya Sanles records her second shutout
RENO, Nev. -- Long Beach State bounced back with a 3-0 road victory over Nevada Thursday night at Mackay Stadium, behind two first-half goals from Cherrie Cox and a second consecutive shutout from goalkeeper Amaya Sanles.
The Beach improved to 6-1-2 overall and remain unbeaten on the road at 3-0-1 this season. Long Beach State has now recorded six shutouts through nine matches while outscoring opponents 18-7.
Long Beach State wasted little time taking the lead as Cox opened the scoring just 4' into the match. The senior found the net unassisted for her ninth goal of the season, giving the Beach an early 1-0 advantage.
After Sanles made her first save of the night in the 28th minute, the Beach doubled their advantage three minutes later. Kailey Supa set up Cox with 15' left in the half, allowing Cox to finish for her second goal of the match and 10th of the season to send Long Beach State into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
The brace marked Cox's third multi-goal performance of the season, joining her hat trick at Fresno State and two-goal performance against Weber State. She has now scored in five consecutive matches and has 10 goals and 21 points through the first nine contests of the season.
Cox also continued her climb through the Long Beach State career record book. The senior now has 33 career goals, 12 assists and 78 points in 57 appearances for the Beach.
Long Beach State continued to generate chances after halftime. Radisson Banks forced a save in the 56th minute before Cox put two more attempts on target in the 61st and 63rd minutes. Emerson Obrist and Kylie Perez also forced saves as the Beach maintained pressure throughout the second half.
At the other end, Sanles kept Nevada off the board. The sophomore made four of her five saves after halftime, including three over the final five minutes to preserve the clean sheet. Sanles finished with five saves, a career high, while improving to 2-0-0 in her first two collegiate starts. She has yet to allow a goal through 180 minutes this season.
The Beach added one final goal in the closing minute. After Nevada was called for a foul in the box, Banks converted the penalty kick at 88:59 to finish off the 3-0 victory. The goal was Banks' second of the season and sixth of her Long Beach State career.
Long Beach State was efficient throughout the night, putting all 12 of their shots on target. The Beach finished with a 12-7 advantage in shots, a 12-5 edge in shots on goal and a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Cox led the Beach with four shots, putting all four on goal, while Banks and Cassidy Drago each had two shots on target. Eight different Long Beach State players recorded a shot on goal in the victory.
The win moves Long Beach State to 6-1-2 through nine matches and closes out non-conference play with the Beach averaging two goals per match. Cox leads Long Beach State with 10 goals and 21 points, while Ameera White has a team-high seven assists.
