SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – A penalty kick save by the Gauchos didn't stop Long Beach State, who continued to press their advantage and battled back for a 2-2 tie on the road at UC Santa Barbara.

Long Beach State (6-1-3) outshot the Gauchos 18-8 and had 10 shots on goal, but slipped behind UC Santa Barbara (5-1-4) on two occasions despite the Beach holding the attacking edge throughout the evening.

Long Beach State put on the early pressure, leading to a nice shot from Cherrie Cox, but UCSB leader Chayse Yu was able to send in a low cross from the wing that was scored by Hailey Tyacke to give the Gauchos the lead on their first shot of the game.

The Beach was able to put together an answer in the first half in a similar fashion. Forcing a high turnover, Cox worked to the wing, and her cross was poked in by Kailey Supa for her second goal of the season to even the game at 1-1. Cox then earned a free kick in the 36th, which Ameera White took and sent just high.

UCSB responded with their best pressure of the contest. Aurora Schuck came through with a punch clearance and a save in the final five minutes, but the Gauchos took the lead just before the half as Alondra Talamantes was able to chip Schuck after a central entry ball from Sophia Moness.

In the second half, Long Beach State held UCSB to just three shots and built steady pressure. Radisson Banks had a nice attempt that was saved by Maddie Buckley in the 54th minute, and then aggressive pressure by Supa earned a penalty for the Beach. Cox's PK attempt was turned aside by Buckley, though, and the Gauchos continued to lead.

That didn't stop the Beach momentum, and high pressure from Olivia Yu led to a turnover that found Cox at the top of the box, where she delivered a strike to tie the game at 2-2. The Beach then nearly took the lead as a Supa header was lifted over Buckley, but UCSB was able to clear the ball off of the line.

Yu's assist on the game-tying goal was the first point of the season for the freshman, while Cox had a goal and an assist, giving her 11 goals and 24 points on the year to remain among the national leaders in both categories.

The conference-opening road trip continues for Long Beach State on Saturday when the Beach takes on Cal Poly. Live coverage will be on ESPN+ with kickoff set for 6 p.m.
