Cherrie Cox scored her 12th goal of the season in the 1-1 tie.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Stout defense and a moment of magic from Cherrie Cox helped Long Beach State come away with a second straight road tie to begin Big West play on the road at Cal Poly.

As the teams settled into the contest, both squads earned a corner in the opening ten minutes, and Cal Poly (4-3-3, 1-0-1 Big West) took the game's first shot in the 12th minute.

Cox struck on the first shot from Long Beach State (6-1-4, 0-0-2 Big West) minutes later. The senior was, as usual, the first to react as an entry ball from Jordan Candelaria was cleared backwards by the Mustangs, and Cox buried the opportunity to give the Beach a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute. The goal was her 12th of the season which continues to lead the Big West, and leaves her one shy of the Long Beach State career record held by Ashley Gonzalez of 36 goals.

With the Beach holding the lead and absorbing pressure, Cal Poly would earn five first half corner kicks, but none of them resulted in a shot on target as the Long Beach State defense proved to be up to the challenge.

In the second half, Sophia Minnete put the first shot on target for the Mustangs, but it was easily handled by Amaya Sanles for the first and only save of the day for the Beach keepers who were mostly unbothered in front of a strong back line.

Pushing for a second, Kailey Supa sent a cross into Cox, who nearly grabbed a second as her flick rolled past Cal Poly keeper Shannon Parubski but just wide in the 50th. Supa then provided strong pressure in nearly causing a Porubski error later in the 52nd.

On the other end, the key moment for the Mustangs came in the 54th minute, as an entry into Isis Salazar-Ortega led to contact in the box, and after a VAR check, a penalty kick was awarded to Cal Poly. Miah Thomas buried the shot for her fifth goal of the season to tie the game.

Long Beach State pushed forward the rest of the way. A second entry following a Beach corner in the 57th was punched away by Porubski in the final moments, and Cassidy Drago worked a shot with some great footwork in the 73rd minute, but the attempt went wide. Minutes later, a solid Candelaria shot was turned aside in a save from Porubski.

With a pair of road ties, Long Beach State begins the conference season unbeaten and will return home for a pair of games next week at George Allen Field, hosting CSUN on Wednesday, September 30 and Sacramento State on Saturday, October 3.
