A Brooklyn Lee walkoff closed the regular season with the second of two wins on Senior Day.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State did the little things in a captivating final day of the regular season, closing out the home schedule with two one-run wins, including a walkoff in the final game against CSUN.
Long Beach State (29-21, 17-10 Big West) won an exciting pitching battle in the opening game of the day. Graduate Lindsey Cowans got the start for the Beach, and combined with Kate Barnett to allow just one run in a one-run victory for the Beach over CSUN (14-32, 9-18 Big West).
CSUN got the scoring started with some small ball in the first inning. Leadoff batter Vanessa Perez walked, and after a sacrifice bunt and a deep fly, a flare to left scored Perez to put the Matadors in front.
Long Beach State quickly evened the game in the bottom half, as Avery Weisbrook smashed a solo home run over the scoreboard in left field, her third home run of the season to tie the game in one swing. The Beach then pushed in front in the second. Emily Dowden started the inning with a single, and LBSU worked a little small ball of their own, pushing the junior to third where she scored on an RBI single from Lina Apodaca.
That would be all the support that Cowans and Barnett would need. Cowans worked four innings, allowing just that first-inning run, and then Barnett worked a three-inning save, her second of the season, allowing just two hits and no runs.
In a similar fashion to the first game, CSUN scored a run with some small ball, starting the scoring without a hit. Perez again walked to start the game, and after Raegan Jackson was hit by a pitch, a bunt and a groundout gave the Matadors the first run of the game.
That lead would hold until an exciting play in the third. Jiselle Hernandez singled to start the inning, and then Lina Apodaca hit her 19th double of the season, breaking the Long Beach State record and putting two in scoring position. That would be key as a wild pitch scored Hernandez, and then the sophomore rolled home as the throw back got away from CSUN starter Malia Williams to put the Beach in front.
Another instance of strong execution from CSUN tied the game in the sixth as the Matadors manufactured another run. Jackson was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and after a single on a hit and run, a sacrifice fly from Mackenzie Kila tied the game at 2-2.
Heading into the bottom of the seventh, Long Beach State turned over the lineup and the LBSU offensive stars went to work. Apodaca singled up the middle, Weisbrook followed with an infield single, and then Priscilla Iniguez loaded the bases with one out. Brooklyn Lee then finished off the contest with a walkoff single to center, winning the game and the day for the Beach.
Long Beach State will now take part in the Big West Championship, opening play on Wednesday, May 6 in the first game against fourth-seed UC Davis at 1 p.m. The tournament will be hosted by Cal State Fullerton, running through the championship game on Saturday, May 9.
