Dirtbags Clinch Series With Offensive Outburst Against UC San Diego

Long Beach State clinched its second straight conference series with an 11-1 win.
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- The Long Beach State Dirtbags erupted for four first-inning runs and never looked back, defeating UC San Diego 11-1 Saturday night at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field to clinch the Big West series.

The win marked back-to-back conference series victories for the Dirtbags, who improved behind another balanced offensive performance and a pitching staff that worked through traffic while allowing just one run on eight hits.

Long Beach State wasted no time taking control in the opening inning. After Smith Chandler doubled and Trotter Enright singled to put runners at the corners, Dylan Lina walked to load the bases with two outs. Murchael Turner then delivered the big swing of the inning, ripping a three-run double to score Chandler from third, Enright from second and Lina from first for a 3-0 lead. Reid Montgomery followed with an RBI single to center, bringing home Turner and extending the advantage to 4-0.

UC San Diego answered in the second when Nick Costello singled and later scored from second on Ryson Ujimori's RBI double to deep center, trimming the deficit to 4-1.

The Dirtbags added another run in the third inning. Lina doubled to deep center and moved to third on a wild pitch before Kaiden Smaka lifted a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Lina for a 5-1 advantage.

Long Beach State continued to build separation in the fourth. Conner Stewart doubled to deep center after Montgomery reached by hit-by-pitch, and Ty Borgogno followed with an RBI single to left-center to score Montgomery. Chandler added an RBI single that plated Stewart before Enright lined an RBI single to bring home Borgogno and push the lead to 8-1.

Luke Howe settled in on the mound after the second inning, stranding multiple Tritons baserunners throughout his six innings of work. The freshman right-hander earned his fifth victory of the season after allowing one run on six hits while striking out six.

The Dirtbags manufactured another run in the fifth inning after Kaiden Smaka opened the frame with a single to right field. Murchael Turner then reached on a throwing error by shortstop Addison Klepsch, allowing Smaka to advance to second. Pinch hitter Justin Roulston laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position before Conner Stewart lined an RBI single into shallow left field, bringing home Smaka and moving Turner to third for a 9-1 Long Beach State lead.

In the sixth, Lina capped the scoring with a two-run homer to deep left field. Enright, who had walked earlier in the inning, scored ahead of Lina as the Dirtbags extended the lead to 11-1.

The bullpen preserved the lead over the final three innings. Jaxon Baker and Hogan Shelby combined to work through traffic in the seventh and eighth innings before Mason Tymick closed out the ninth. Long Beach State pitchers stranded 14 Tritons baserunners in the victory.

Stewart and Lina each recorded three hits to lead the Dirtbags offense. Borgogno, Chandler and Enright added two hits apiece, while Turner finished with three RBIs and Lina drove in two.
