Justin Roulston’s two-run homer gave Long Beach State its first lead in the series Sunday.
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- After honoring 13 seniors before first pitch at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field, the Long Beach State Dirtbags grabbed an early lead in the game behind a clutch swing from Justin Roulston before No. 10 Oregon State answered late to secure an 8-4 win in Sunday's series finale.
Oregon State struck first in the opening inning after Easton Talt worked a leadoff walk and stole second. AJ Singer followed with an RBI single into left field to bring home Talt for a 1-0 Beaver advantage. The Dirtbags quickly cut down further damage with a pop up and strikeout.
The defensive highlight of the afternoon came in the top of the second when Smith Chandler raced back to the wall in left field and leaped to rob Adam Haight of a home run, preserving the one-run deficit.
That spark carried into the bottom half as Kaiden Smaka opened the inning with a single to shallow right before Roulston launched a two-run homer deep over the left field wall. The blast gave the Dirtbags a 2-1 lead, marking Long Beach State's first advantage of the series.
Oregon State responded in the third. Talt drew another walk ahead of Singer, who hit a two-run home run to left field to swing the lead back in favor of the Beavers at 3-2.
Long Beach State evened the game in the fifth thanks to hustle and pressure on the bases. Conner Stewart reached on a fielding error in left field and moved to third after Ty Borgogno dropped down a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Chandler beat out an infield single to score Stewart from third and tie the game at 3-3.
An inning later, the Beavers capitalized on defensive miscues to take control. Singer opened the sixth with a walk before Bryce Hubbard singled to put runners at the corners. Paul Vazquez grounded into a double play, but Singer crossed the plate to put Oregon State ahead 4-3. Errors later in the inning helped extend the rally as Josh Proctor delivered an RBI single and Jacob Galloway followed with a two-run single to left center, pushing the lead to 7-3.
The Dirtbags threatened again in the seventh. Smaka singled down the right field line and Roulston followed with his third hit of the afternoon on a single to center. Stewart's fielder's choice advanced both runners before Borgogno lined an RBI single into shallow left field to score Smaka and cut the deficit to 7-4.
Oregon State added its final run in the ninth after Talt singled and stole second before Singer delivered another RBI single to left.
Roulston paced the Dirtbags offensively with three hits, including his two-run homer and two RBIs, while Smaka finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Chandler added an RBI single as Long Beach State totaled seven hits on the afternoon.
On the mound, Jason Gerfers struck out six across six innings in his start, allowing three earned runs. Jaxon Baker followed with a dominant inning of relief, recording three strikeouts without allowing a hit or run, before Mason Tymick and Tyler Gebb closed out the afternoon.
Prior to first pitch, the Dirtbags honored 13 seniors: Ty Borgogno, Van Larson, Dylan Lina, Joey Iglesias, Erick Diez, Alex Ramos, Justin Roulston, Aaron Perez, Easton Elliot, Conner Stewart, Cristien Banda, Camden Gasser and Caleb Anderson.
Long Beach State will now turn its attention to Big West play next weekend with a three-game road series against first-place Cal Poly Mustangs.
