Women’s Water Polo Defeats No. 7 LMU In Exhibition Game

The Beach took early control in their final test before the Big West Championships.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Leading wire to wire, No. 8 Long Beach State defeated No. 7 LMU in an exhibition game at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center on Friday afternoon, 10-7, in their last test before the conference championship.
Long Beach State (15-10) opened with a strong first quarter, scoring three unanswered goals with Chiara Amoroso, Rita Gurri, and Elisa Portillo, while Polina Synytsia secured the team on defense.
LMU (21-4) answered back in the second, capitalizing on two power plays before Grace Cuozzo scored on a turnover, extending the lead to 4-2. A late goal by the Lions shortened the gap at halftime as they trailed the Beach, 4-3.
The second half started with both teams trading goals before the Beach extended the lead to 7-4, after back-to-back goals by Portillo and Jermonie Billingsly.
LBSU opened the fourth quarter with a three-goal run to take control over LMU in the final frame, leading 10-4 with 4:18 left. The Lions answered back with their own 3-0 run to close the gap, but without much time left in the game, the Beach controlled the game to a 10-7 win in an exhibition match and their final test before the conference championships.
Chiara Amoroso led the team with a hat trick, while Polina Synytsia recorded eight saves, dished out two assists, and had three steals.
The Beach now waits for final seedings for the Big West Championship starting Friday, April 10 at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center.
