Dirtbags Shut Out In Series Finale, Still Claim Series Win At UC Davis

Long Beach State falls 3-0 Sunday afternoon, but secures road series victory.
DAVIS, Calif. -- Long Beach State was held scoreless in the finale, falling 3-0 to UC Davis on Sunday afternoon, but secured the series, 2-1.
The Dirtbags threatened early in the first inning as Trotter Enright singled to left and Smith Chandler drew a walk to put runners on first and second with no outs. A sacrifice bunt by Matt Toomey moved both runners into scoring position, and a walk by Dylan Lina loaded the bases, but UC Davis worked out of the jam to keep the game scoreless.
Long Beach State continued to find opportunities throughout the game. Toomey added a single in the third, while Justin Roulston delivered a two-out double to left center in the fourth. In the fifth, Camden Gasser walked and Enright followed with a single to put two aboard, but a double play ended the threat.
The Aggies broke through in the seventh inning starting with Joey Writght being hit by pitch. Tyler Howard then reached on a fielder choice, Wright is out at second base on the play. A walk to Ryan Lee and a hit-by-pitch to Braydon Wooldridge loaded the bases with one out. Korey Williams then singled to shortstop, scoring Howard from third while advancing the runners. Elijah McNeal followed with a single back to the pitcher, bringing Lee home from third and reloaded the bases. Zach Story drew a bases-loaded walk, forcing in Wooldridge from third to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Dirtbags put together one final push in the ninth when Murchael Turner singled to right center before Roulston grounded into a double play. Damon Valdez kept the frame alive with a single through the left side and Gasser worked a walk to put two runners on, but the rally ended on a strikeout to secure the shutout for the Aggies.
Long Beach State tallied eight hits in the contest. Enright and Toomey each recording two hits while Turner, Valdez, and Roulston also contributed with base hits.
On the mound, Jason Gerfers (2-6) turned in a solid start, allowing two runs on four hits over 6.1 innings with six strikeouts.Despite the loss, the Dirtbags take the series over the Aggies, as they return home for the next stretch of games.
