Beach dominates doubles and clinches three straight-set singles wins to advance to quarterfinals
SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Long Beach State opened postseason play in dominant fashion on Wednesday, sweeping UC San Diego 4-0 at the Barnes Tennis Center to advance to the quarterfinals of the Big West Tennis Championships.
The Beach set the tone early by securing the doubles point with convincing performances on two courts. Cecilia Costa and Paulina Franco rolled to a 6-2 win at the top position, while Daisy Carpenter and Diana De Simone followed with a 6-3 victory at No. 3 to clinch the point. The No. 2 match featuring Pamela Badillo and Thea Jagare was left unfinished at 5-5 once the point was decided.
Carrying that momentum into singles, Long Beach State quickly built an insurmountable lead. The clinching stretch came from the middle and lower part of the lineup, where the Beach secured three straight-set victories. Thea Jagare delivered a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3, followed by Paulina Franco's 6-3, 6-4 decision at No. 4. Pamela Badillo sealed the match with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 5, pushing the overall score to 4-0.
Several other courts were trending in Long Beach State's favor before play was halted. Diana De Simone held a 6-2, 5-4 advantage at No. 2, while Cecilia Costa was battling in a tight three-set contest at the top spot.
With the sweep, Long Beach State advances to the quarterfinal round of the Big West Championships, carrying strong form after controlling both doubles and singles play from start to finish.
