Seniors Deliver As Beach Volleyball Picks Up Two Critical Ranked Wins

Long Beach State’s three seniors were a perfect 4-0 on Senior Day.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – No. 10 Long Beach State hosted No. 11 Grand Canyon and No. 12 Arizona State in a Senior Day packed with postseason implications, but the Beach and their seniors were up to the challenge, winning both matches 3-2 at LBCC on Friday evening.
The three seniors for the Beach, Malia Gementera, Taylor Hagenah and Savannah Standage each had two wins over the two matches, keying the victories for Long Beach State (22-10).
The day opened against No. 12 Arizona State (17-13). Standage, along with Victoria Henkel, dominated the second set in a 21-18, 21-7 win over McKenna Flaherty and Kristin Gilmour to give the Beach a quick point, and then Gementera and Hagenah also won in straight sets, 21-19, 21-18, to put LBSU in a commanding position in the match. Kiara Edwards and Mahala Esser then clinched the win with a 21-18, 22-20 victory in the third set for the Beach.
ASU pulled back two points, winning a wild 29-27 second set at the twos to grab the first point before Zoe Taylor and Layla Williams won a three-setter in the fifth flight, 15-21, 21-19, 15-13.
The second match against No. 11 Grand Canyon featured more late intrigue. Tineke Hinton and Demi Wagdy rallied from their opening loss to roll to a 21-15, 21-15 win in the second flight to pick up the first point for the Beach. Henkel and Standage quickly followed, winning 21-15, 21-19 to give the Beach another big lead.
GCU answered with a 21-16, 21-19 win in the fifth flight, setting up two third sets to decide the match.
In the top flight, Gementera and Hagenah were stunned 12-21 in the first set, but showed their maturity and skill in recovering, sealing a huge point and match win 12-21, 21-16, 15-13 over Karynn Garrow and Becca Drake to clinch the win, while the Antelopes held off Edwards and Esser 16-21, 21-19, 16-14 to snag a second point.
No. 10 Long Beach State will now start the postseason by taking part in the Big West Championship. Double elimination competition between all seven teams in the conference will begin on April 23. A champion will be decided on April 24 earning the Big West's automatic bid in the NCAA Championship, which will once again be held in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
