Long Beach State bullpen steadies game after early deficit in rivalry opener
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Long Beach State dropped Friday night's series opener to Cal State Fullerton, 10-0, at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field, but found a bright spot in a resilient bullpen performance that stabilized the game after a difficult start.
Caleb Anderson (1-5) took the loss after allowing eight runs, over the first 1.1 innings as the Titans built an early advantage.
From there, the Dirtbags' pitching staff responded. Sophomore Ka'imi Kahalekai delivered the longest outing of his career, tossing 5.2 innings while allowing just two runs on four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts, helping slow Fullerton's offense following back-to-back four-run innings. His effort included four consecutive scoreless frames from the fourth through the seventh.
Brad Grindlinger added a scoreless inning in relief, and Hogan Shelby closed out the game with a shutout frame, as the bullpen combined to hold the Titans scoreless over the final six innings.
Long Beach State was limited to five hits offensively and was shut out for the third time this season, and the second time at home following the season opener against San Jose State.
The Dirtbags will look to bounce back as the series continues Saturday at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
