No. 11 Long Beach State swept Cal State Bakersfield but lost to No. 3 Cal Poly on the final day.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State split their final two matches at the Big West Challenge, as Beach Volleyball finished the annual tournament 5-1, the second-best record among the seven Big West teams participating.
No. 11 Long Beach State (15-5) and No. 3 Cal Poly played in LBSU's first match of the day, one the marquee matches of the tournament that pitted the two highest ranked teams against each other. Kiara Edwards and Savannah Standage defeated Quinn Perry and Ashleigh Adams in the first set of the third flight, but after powering through an injury to complete the second set, Standage was unable to continue and the Mustangs took the flight in the closest match of the dual.
Ella Connor and Erin Inskeep held off Malia Gementera and Taylor Hagenah in the top flight, 21-17, 21-19, and Kealoha Phillips and Brooke Birch were on the wrong side of two very close sets as well, falling 25-23, 21-18 to Peyton Dueck and Bailey Showalter.
Closing the nine-match day and the 21-match tournament, Long Beach State rolled to a sweep over Cal State Bakersfield. Gementera and Hagenah cruised to a 21-11, 21-12 win in the top flight, while Tineke Hinton and Demi Wagdy continued a solid tournament as well with a 21-14, 21-16 win over Vivi and Kendall Kaelin. Victoria Henkel and Mahala Esser clinched the match with a 21-14, 21-8 win at the fours, while Josie Gamberdella made her first lineup appearance for the Beach in place of Standage in a 21-17, 21-16 win with Edwards.
Each Big West team faced all others in the Big West Challenge, a tournament held annually in lieu of round-robin play. Long Beach State went 5-1 in the tournament, losing only to Cal Poly, who were the only team to go unbeaten.
Long Beach State will next head to Austin, Texas, playing four southern teams including Texas as the Longhorns host the Beach over March 27 and 28.
