Long Beach State Begins Big West Challenge With Two Wins

No. 11 Beach Volleyball swept Sacramento State before a thrilling 4-1 win over No. 13 Hawai’i.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – In the first day of three full days of action at Rosie's Dog Beach for the Big West Challenge, it was No. 11 Long Beach State Beach Volleyball that got off to a fast start, winning two matches, including an exciting 4-1 win over No. 13 Hawai'i.
The Big West Challenge opened with Hawai'i (8-9) defeating Sacramento State (8-7), and then Long Beach State (12-4) would face off against both teams back to back.
The Beach started with a sweep over Sacramento State. Malia Gementera and Taylor Hagenah controlled the action at the top of the lineup in a 21-9, 21-12 win to start the day, and Kiara Edwards and Savanah Standage at the threes, and Victoria Henkel and Mahala Esser at the fours each won in straight sets to clinch the win.
Competing in the lineup for the second time this season, Madi Collins and Brooke Wooley defeated Skyler Gartin and Keonahi'ila Solaita of the Hornets 21-14, 22-20 in the fifth flight, while Tineke Hinton and Demi Wagdy outlasted Victoria Marthaler and Aurora Bibolotti at the twos after Marthaler/Bibolotti picked up Sacramento State's point against UH,
19-21, 21-14, 15-10.
In the second match, Julia Lawrenz and Izadora Stedile stunned Gementera and Hagenah 21-17, 21-18 to pick up a point between the evenly matched Rainbow Wahine and Long Beach State. All four of the other matches went to a third set, but Long Beach State would ultimately win all four, closing out Hawai'i 4-1 in four thrilling matches, finishing within minutes of each other in exciting action in Long Beach.
The Big West Challenge will run for two more full days of action, both Saturday and Sunday at Rosie's Dog Beach, with nine matches each day. Long Beach State will compete in two matches on Saturday, hosting CSUN at 8 a.m. before playing UC Davis at 11:30 a.m.
