Gavin Sykes Named Big West Player of the Week

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Gavin Sykes earned Big West Player of the Week honors for the second time this season after two high-scoring performances to help the freshman reach the highest scoring mark for that class in school history.

Over two games, Sykes averaged 33.5 points per game including a career-high on Saturday, scoring 39 points at Cal State Bakersfield which included the game-winner in the closing seconds. That came after a 28 point game at Cal Poly for the freshman.

In doing so, Sykes moved past Beach legend Lucious Harris for the most points scored at Long Beach State as a freshman, and also became just the 32nd player in program history to score 500 points in one season at Long Beach State.

Sykes is now a two-time winner this season, having previously won following his previous season and career-high at CSUN with 34 points for the week of January 19.

Long Beach State will play their final home game of the season on Thursday, hosting UC Davis at 7 p.m. in the LBS Financial Credit Union Pyramid.
