Long Beach State fell on the road as the Aztecs pulled away in the second half.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Playing with just 10 dressed and one forward, Long Beach State showed their heart and grit in a solid first half at San Diego State, but the depth of the Aztecs carried the second half in a 92-67 exhibition defeat.
Long Beach State played without four forwards, but had a strong first half on the road at San Diego State. Freshman Max VanLaningham played the full 20 minutes, pulling down six rebounds with four points to help keep the Beach in the physical battle with San Diego State.
A hot stretch from the field helped SDSU jump out to an early lead, but despite being down 16-11, the Beach pulled back to take a 19-18 lead after a second-chance bucket from Vanlaningham. A 7-0 run for the Aztecs reestablished the lead, and San Diego State led 45-38 at halftime.
An edge of three rebounds at the half would expand to a gap of 20 by the end of the contest, as the size and depth of the Aztecs allowed San Diego State to pull away in the second half. The Aztecs out-rebounded the Beach 25-8 in the second 20, and balanced scoring saw six players from San Diego State end in double-figures.
Yohann Sissoko led the way for Long Beach State with 14 points, while Brett Wright added 12 off of the bench for the Beach. McCaden Adams and Jack Payne each finished with nine points.
The regular season starts for Long Beach State on Monday, November 2 when Long Beach State travels to face Utah in the season opener at 6 p.m. PT on ESPN+.
