LONG BEACH, Calif. – No. 7 Long Beach State battled in the first half to hold No. 3 USC, but a strong second half by the guests secured a 16-8 win over the Beach in the first home game of the season. Lucy Miszweski paced the offense with five goals while Polina Synytsia recorded 11 saves.

USC (9-1) got off to a quick start, pushing a strong defense to lead 3-0 with 5:40 left. Long Beach State (7-5) got one past the Trojans defense with Lucy Miszweski to cut the margin, but a penalty goal by SC closed the first quarter, 4-1 in their favor.

In the second period of the game, the Beach got one on the board quickly with Chiara Amoroso before the Trojans' 3-0 run extended the gap to 7-2. Long Beach State went on their own 3-0 run to close the quarter and shorten the gap after two goals from Miszweski and one from Ronny Gazit, trailing 7-5 at halftime. Freshman Polina Synytsia recorded seven saves in the first half to keep the Beach within striking margin.

Both teams opened the second half trading goals, with Miszweski's fourth of the game. Three unanswered goals by the Trojans extended the lead to 11-6 with one quarter left to play.

Another strong quarter by the Trojans secured a comfortable win despite another career-high 11 saves by Synytsia and five goals from Miszweski, falling in their first home game of the season, 16-8.

The Beach will head next to Irvine for the Barbara Kalbus Invitational starting on February 13, with the opponent still to be decided.
