Beach Volleyball Splits Two Matches On First Day Of Battle For LA

No. 11 Long Beach State cruised over Concordia before falling on the road at No. 8 LMU.
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Playing two matches at LMU, Long Beach State won 5-0 over Concordia but then suffered their first loss of the season, falling to No. 8 Loyola Marymount 4-1.
Long Beach State (3-1) started the day with a quick win over Concordia (3-2), winning all five matches in straight sets. Tineke Hinton and Demi Wagdy remained unbeaten with a 21-11, 21-17 win, while Brooke Birch and Kealoha Phillips were 21-10, 21-13 winners as the Beach took both matches in the first wave.
In the second, Victoria Henkel and Mahala Esser sealed the win with a 21-14, 2-12 win over Rosie Cline and Jordan Vander Veen. Malia Gementera and Talyor Hagenah grabbed their third win of the season with a 21-17, 21-12 in the top flight, and Kiara Edwards and Savannah Standage finished off the sweep.
Facing the hosts, No. 8 Loyola Marymount (3-4), it was the Lions that took the first wave of matches to move out to a lead. Magdalena Rabistch and Ines Piret handed Wagdy and Hinton their first defeat of the season, while Maja Kruckek and Josefine Schaekel won a close match with Phillips and Birch 21-19, 21-16.
In the second wave, Gementera and Hagenah were 21-18, 13-21, 15-10 winners over Tanon Rosenthal and Anna Pelloia 21-18, 13-21, 15-10. Chloe Hooker and Jaeya Brach clinched the win in the third flight over Edwards and Standage, while Esser and Henkel lost in a close first set on the way to a 22-20, 21-15 defeat in the fifth flight.
