Long Beach State Rallies Past Cal Poly 67-57 In Thrilling Home Win

Long Beach State storms back in the fourth quarter to secure its fourth win of the season with a 67-57 victory over Cal Poly at the LBS Financial Credit Union Pyramid
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Long Beach State battled through the buzzer Thursday night, defeating Cal Poly 67-57 at the LBS Financial Credit Union Pyramid. The Beach closed the game on a dominant fourth-quarter run, outscoring the Mustangs 26-8 over the final 10 minutes to erase an eight-point deficit and pull away late.
The victory moves Long Beach State to 4-23 overall and 3-14 in Big West play.
JaQuoia Jones-Brown delivered a standout performance, finishing with 28 points on 10-19 shooting and a perfect 7-7 from the free throw line in 40 minutes of action. The sophomore added six rebounds and helped anchor a fourth-quarter surge that flipped the game decisively in the Beach's favor.
Freshman Rosie Akot provided a strong complementary effort with 15 points, knocking down 5-10 from the field and 2-4 from three-point range. She also contributed five rebounds and three assists. Brynna Pukis chipped in six points, all from beyond the arc.
Long Beach State came out sharp, opening the game on a 10-0 run and building a 15-10 lead after the first quarter. Cal Poly answered back in the second quarter, holding the Beach to just seven points and taking a 28-22 lead into halftime.
The Mustangs extended their advantage to 49-41 by the end of the third quarter, capitalizing on efficient shooting and second-chance opportunities. The Beach responded dramatically, and the momentum shifted in the fourth.
Long Beach State tightened its defense and attacked the rim, limiting Cal Poly to just 2-9 shooting in the final period. The Beach shot 6-12 in the fourth and went 13-17 from the free throw line in the quarter, consistently converting down the stretch. A 13-0 run late in the game sealed the outcome, as the Beach turned a narrow deficit into a double-digit cushion.
For the game, Long Beach State shot 46.2 percent from the field and 50.0 percent from three-point range (6-12), while outrebounding Cal Poly 33-31. The Beach also forced 13 turnovers and converted key fast-break opportunities, holding a 8-2 edge in fast-break points.
With the 67-57 victory, Long Beach State moves to 3-14 in Big West play and, with three games remaining in the regular season including two more at the Pyramid, will aim to sustain momentum and continue to defend its home floor down the stretch.
