Behind a six-run fourth inning and Dylan Lina’s first home run of the season, Long Beach State pulled away from BYU for a 10-7 win Wednesday night at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
Long Beach State (3-5) struck first in the second when Camden Gasser singled to shallow left to score Jake Evans. After BYU evened the game in the third, the Dirtbags answered with two runs in the bottom half. Trotter Enright delivered an RBI single to score Matt Toomey, and Perez reached on an error that allowed Enright to score an unearned run for a 3-1 advantage.
BYU tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth on a two-run single from Matt Hansen, setting the stage for an explosive response from the Dirtbags in the bottom of the frame.
LBSU broke open the game in the fourth, highlighted by Dylan Lina's three-run home run to deep left, his first of the season, that gave Long Beach State a 6-3 lead. The runs continued to pour in with RBI singles from Aaron Perez and a bases-loaded walk by Trevor Goldenetz, followed by a hit-by-pitch RBI from Smith Chandler to cap the six-run frame.
The Dirtbags added an insurance run in the fifth when Gasser drew a bases-loaded walk to push the lead to 10-4. BYU threatened, closing the gap with a three-run eighth. Long Beach State turned to Ka'imi Kahalekai on the mound in the ninth. The right-hander struck out two to put the game away and earn his first save of the season.
Jason Gerfers (2-1) earned the win, allowing one run on one hit over three innings with two strikeouts. The bullpen combined to cover the final five innings, with Hogan Shelby, Alex Ramos and Caleb Anderson bridging to Kahalekai. Anderson allowed three runs over two innings, while Ramos struck out three in a scoreless sixth.
Offensively, the Dirtbags tallied 10 hits and drew seven walks, while also being hit by 10 pitches, tying an NCAA single-game record last achieved in 2019. Lina led the Dirtbags offensively with the team's first homerun of the season, along with three RBIs, and two runs scored. Enright went 2-for-6 with an RBI and two runs, and Gasser added two RBIs. Evans scored once and doubled, while Goldenetz reached base three times and drove in a run.
Long Beach State will continue its four-game homestand Friday night against Washington State. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.
