Long Beach State Improves to 4-4 with Second Straight Win
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Long Beach State continued its upward trajectory Sunday with a dominant 6-1 victory over Santa Clara at Rhodes Tennis Center. The win pushes the Beach to 4-4 overall and marks its second consecutive triumph, evening its record after a competitive start to the spring campaign.
The Beach wasted little time establishing control, securing the doubles point with authority.
On Court 1, Cecilia Costa and Paulina Franco delivered a sharp 6-1 win, dictating play from the outset with aggressive net pressure and clean ball striking.
Pamela Badillo and Thea Jagare followed on Court 3 with a 6-2 victory, executing consistently in extended rallies and closing out games with disciplined serving. With two courts secured, the doubles point was clinched before Court 2, where Long Beach State held a 5-2 lead, could finish.
The early 1-0 advantage provided clear momentum heading into singles play.
Long Beach State captured five of six singles matches, showcasing balance and depth across the lineup.
Cecilia Costa turned in the most decisive performance of the afternoon, earning a 6-0, 6-0 shutout at No. 3 singles. Her precision from the baseline and relentless pace gave her opponent little opportunity to respond.
At No. 2 singles, Thea Jagare posted a commanding 6-3, 6-0 victory, controlling the tempo and capitalizing on short balls to keep pressure constant.
Pamela Badillo added another straight-sets win at No. 5, 6-1, 6-4, maintaining composure in tight service games to extend the team lead.
Diana De Simone showed resilience at the top spot, winning a tightly contested first-set tiebreak before closing out a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 decision at No. 1 singles.
Paulina Franco sealed the team victory at court No. 6, rebounding from a first-set loss to claim a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 three-set victory.
Next, the Beach return to Big West play, hosting UC San Diego on Friday, February 20. First serve is set for noon.
