Franco clinches decisive point as Long Beach State improves to 5-4 on the season
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- No. 52 Long Beach State edged UC San Diego 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at Rhodes Tennis Center, securing a tightly contested Big West dual that came down to the final singles court. The victory moves the Beach to 5-4, 2-0 Big West overall, while the Tritons fall to 4-7, 0-2 Big West.
Long Beach State opened the afternoon by capturing the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. Cecilia Costa and Paulina Franco set the tone at the top spot with a 6-4 victory over Olivia Allegre and Julia Visaya. UC San Diego answered with a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles as Daisy Carpenter and Diana De Simone delivered a dominant 6-0 performance on court three to secure the early 1-0 team advantage.
Singles play featured momentum swings throughout the lineup. Costa extended the Beach lead at No. 3 singles with a composed 6-3, 6-2 straight set win over Alisa Lansky. Pamela Badillo followed with a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Allison Lian at No. 5, putting Long Beach State within one point of the team win.
UC San Diego responded at the top of the order. At No. 1 singles, Allegre rallied after dropping a first set tiebreak to defeat Diana De Simone 6-7, 6-1, 6-3.
