LONG BEACH, Calif. – The No. 7 Long Beach State men's water polo team fell 13-12 to No. 10 UC San Diego to open Big West play at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center on Friday night.
Long Beach State (11-5, 0-1) got off to a great start as Corbin Stanley scored on the opening possession of the game to give the Beach an early lead. UC San Diego (12-4, 1-0) answered, but back-to-back scores from Marc Frigola Navarro put Long Beach State in front 3-1 halfway through the opening period.
After the teams went scoreless in the rest of the first, the Tritons opened the second quarter scoring on their first two possessions to tie the game 3-all. Zalán Nagy then put the Beach back in front before UC San Diego netted two-straight scores to take a 5-4 lead. Trailing for the first time in the game, Harper Stewart and Nagy scored back-to-back times for the Beach to give them a slight edge at the half, 6-5.
Olivér Sudár converted a power play to give the Beach a two-goal advantage, but the Tritons scored the contest's next three goals to take an 8-7 lead early on in the third. Nagy then tied the game for the sixth time as he earned his fourth hat trick of the year. However, UC San Diego scored twice in a row to propel them to an 11-10 lead with eight minutes left to play.
The Tritons scored the first goal of the fourth to go up 12-10 midway through the final frame. Looking to comeback, goals from Gabi Acosta and Sudár kept the Beach within one with 1:28 left in the fourth quarter, 13-12.
