Long Beach State opened the tournament at the Jack Kramer Club against UCLA and Cal Poly.
Thea Jagare and Pamela Badillo were perfect in doubles. The duo opened both matches with wins, defeating UCLA's Rona Rugara and Polina Marakhtanova 6-2, before defeating Cal Poly's Candela Aparisi 6-3. Badillo and Jagare then each cruised to singles wins against the Mustangs, with Badillo winning 6-4, 6-2 and Jagare taking her match 6-0, 6-3.
Against UCLA, the Bruins won all four singles contests, two of which went to a match tiebreak. Jagare fell 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-8) and Elen Jantacova lost 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-6). Diana De Simone fell 6-2, 6-0 and Badillo dropped a 6-3, 7-5 decision.
The Beach was just as close against Cal Poly, with two more singles matches decided by a match tiebreak. De Simone fell 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-5) and Jantacova lost 4-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-7). De Simone and Jantacova were also edged in doubles 6-4.
