LBSU Opens Big West Play With 5-2 Win At UC Riverside

Beach secure doubles point and four singles victories to improve to 2-1 on the season
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Long Beach State women's tennis team opened Big West Conference play with a 5-2 road victory over UC Riverside on Thursday afternoon at the SRC Tennis Courts. With the win, the Beach improved to 2-1 overall on the season.
Long Beach State set the tone early by claiming the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. At the No. 1 spot, Paulina Franco and Cecilia Costa earned a 6-3 victory over Kei Kato and Ramey Yu. The point was clinched on court three as Diana De Simone and Pamela Badillo also posted a 6-3 win to give the Beach an early 1-0 advantage.
In singles play, Long Beach State picked up four victories to secure the match. De Simone extended the LBSU lead at No. 2 singles with a dominant 6-2, 6-2 win over Kato. Daria Malaescu followed at the No. 4 position, earning a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Crystal Kim.
The Beach added another point at No. 5 singles as Franco completed a double on the day with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Camile Li. Johanna Hiesmair sealed the team victory at No. 6, defeating Katarina Curcic 6-2, 6-2.
UC Riverside earned its two points at the top of the lineup with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 singles.
Long Beach State returns home to the Rhodes Tennis Center to host Grand Canyon in a nonconference match on Saturday at noon.
