Nationally ranked Red Raiders defeat Long Beach State 4-0 in Lubbock
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Long Beach State women's tennis opened the 18th Annual ITA Kickoff Weekend on Friday, falling 4-0 to No. 21 Texas Tech in Lubbock. The Beach faced the nationally ranked Red Raiders at the Falls Tennis and Athletic Club as part of one of college tennis' most prestigious early season events.
Texas Tech secured the doubles point with narrow victories on courts one and two. The Beach pairing of Thea Jagare and Cecilia Costa competed on court one before dropping a 6-3 decision to the No. 75 ranked tandem of Kate Dmitrichenko and Hailey Murphy. On court two, Diana De Simone and Pamela Badillo battled in a tight match that ended 6-4 in favor of the Red Raiders. The third doubles match with Paulina Franco and Daisy Carpenter was still in progress, with Long Beach State leading 5-4, when the point was clinched.
In singles play, Texas Tech closed out the match with wins on courts four, two, and three. Daria Malaescu competed at the No. 4 position before falling 6-0, 6-3, while De Simone faced No. 110 Murphy on court two. Costa pushed Mariia Hlahola to a second-set tiebreaker at the No. 3 spot, forcing extra points before the Red Raider clinched the match. At the top of the lineup, Jagare was locked in a competitive contest, trailing 6-4, 5-2, when play was stopped.
The Beach showed competitiveness throughout the lineup against a Texas Tech team ranked No. 21 in the ITA national poll and seeded first in the Lubbock Regional. Several matches remained closely contested when the dual was decided, reflecting Long Beach State's ability to compete against top-25 opposition early in the spring season.
Interim head coach Gertjan de Wilder reflected on the match, saying, "This was the first time we've played a team ranked that high, and it was a new experience for everyone. We came out big in doubles, losing narrowly on courts one and two, and we were up 5-4 in the unfinished match, which showed that we belong there. It was a great experience for the team, and facing opponents at this level helps prepare us for conference competition."
Long Beach State will continue play at the ITA Kickoff Weekend on Saturday, matching up with the runner-up of tonight's Oklahoma State and Wichita State dual.
