Senior Rhiann Sheffie led four in double-figure kills for Long Beach State with 13.
SAN FRANCISCO – Sophomore Madi Maxwell guided a balanced offense to .381 hitting, as Long Beach State piled up 55 kills over three sets in a 25-23, 25-20, 25-16 win at San Francisco.
Rhiann Sheffie led Long Beach State (2-4) with 13 kills, but the Beach had four in double figure kills as the senior was joined by Logan King, Sidney Hamaker, and Elise Agi, who each had 11 kills against the Dons. Maxwell finished the night with 37 assists and an ace, while libero Anna Jelenik finished with 11 digs for the Beach.
The first set was the closest as San Francisco (1-3) as the Dons got off to a quick start. An ace from Astrid Puig put the Dons in front 3-1, though Long Beach State quickly recovered, tying the set at 4-4 on a kill from freshman Sidney Hamaker. The teams traded short runs through the rest of the first set, with a block from San Francisco giving the Dons a 22-20 lead.
Long Beach State responded with a huge push. Agi got the run started with a kill, and a block from Sheffie and King tied the set at 22-22. Sheffie put the Beach in front out of a USF timeout at 23-22, and an Agi kill created set point for the Beach at 24-22. San Francisco was able to get a side out, but the Beach went back to Agi to close out the first 25-23.
The Beach had better control throughout the second set. Pushing to an 8-5 lead with a Nieko Thomas kill, the Beach would move out to a 13-7 lead after an Agi kill. The Dons recovered, pulling back within one at 19-18, but a critical ace from Maxwell pushed the lead to 21-18, and a kill from King extended the lead to four on the way to a 25-20 set two win.
With the momentum firmly on their side after the first two sets, Long Beach State was clinical in closing out the match in the third. The Beach hit .531 in the second set and kept that going in the third, making just one error while hitting .405 with 18 kills. Hamaker finished off a kill to put the Beach up 6-3, and leading 13-8, Sheffie and Agi found the floor to put the Beach up seven points. Taking a 19-10 lead on the sixth of seven blocks on the night, the Beach then cruised the rest of the way to a 25-16 win in the third.
Following the team's trip to the Bay Area, Long Beach State will return home to the Walter Pyramid, hosting two excellent West Coast opponents in Oregon and San Diego State. The Beach takes on the Ducks on Friday, September 12, and the Aztecs on Saturday, September 13. Both matches will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
