Oregon Defeats Long Beach State In Straight Sets

Jelinek records team high nine digs; King with a team-best eight kills
LONG BEACH, Calif. — Oregon handed Long Beach State a 3-0 defeat in women's volleyball action Friday night at the Walter Pyramid.
The Ducks took control early and never let go in the opening set, rolling past the Beach 25-16. After trading points to a 2-2 tie, Oregon broke away behind the serving of Natalie Fukumoto, who delivered an ace and sparked a 6-2 run. Valentina Vaulet and Iva Sucurovic combined for a block to make it 5-2, and the Ducks stretched the margin to 14-7 on kills from Marlee Arrington and Maria Tabacuks. Oregon's defense frustrated Long Beach State at the net, forcing multiple attack errors while Cora Taylor set the offense in rhythm. Vaulet capped the set with a kill off a feed from Taylor, sealing the 25-16 decision and giving Oregon a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Ducks kept the momentum rolling in the second set, pulling away late for a 25-17 win. After a back-and-forth start, Oregon used a block by Sucurovic and Vaulet to open an 8-4 lead and force a Beach timeout. Long Beach State closed within 14-13 on a kill by Nieko Thomas, but Oregon responded with a 6-1 surge capped by a solo block from Tabacuks. Taylor's steady setting guided the Ducks' offense, while Vaulet again delivered in crunch time, finishing the set with a kill to give Oregon a 2-0 lead.
The Ducks put the match away with a 25-15 victory in the third. Vaulet and Sophia Meyers sparked a blistering start, combining for three kills in the first four points. Oregon's block continued to stifle the Beach, with Sucurovic and Meyers stuffing Logan King to push the lead to 6-2. Vaulet took over from there, scoring on consecutive swings and adding back-to-back service aces for a 21-15 cushion. Meyers sealed the sweep on match point, finishing a feed from Taylor as Oregon closed out the night in straight sets.
The Ducks (6-1) outhit the Beach .305 to .126. Vaulet led Oregon with 13 kills and five blocks. Meyers added 11 kills, while King's eight kills paced Long Beach State. Anna Jelinek tallied a team-high nine digs.
