King, Hamaker lead balanced attack as Beach overpower Aztecs at the net
LONG BEACH, Calif. — Long Beach State outlasted San Diego State in four sets Saturday night, winning 3-1 at the Walter Pyramid.
San Diego State rallied from an early deficit to take the opening set 25-19. The Beach jumped ahead 12-10 behind kills from Logan King and Sidney Hamaker, but the Aztecs stormed back after the media timeout. Zara Stewart sparked the surge at the service line, delivering two aces and setting up Ella Schabort for back-to-back kills as SDSU reeled off nine of the next 10 points to seize a 20-16 lead.
Schabort finished the frame with a kill and a block assist alongside Campbell Hague to set up set point, before a Beach attack error closed it out. Hamaker and King paced LBSU early with multiple kills, while Mila Gehlen and Kendall Mairs countered for SDSU.
Long Beach State held off a late San Diego State rally to even the match, taking the second set 25-23. King powered the Beach with key swings late, including the set-clinching kill off a feed from Madi Maxwell. The Beach built a 10-5 advantage behind strong net play from Nieko Thomas and Maxwell, who combined for multiple blocks, but the Aztecs clawed back with a five-point surge capped by a Madison Corfe ace to tie it at 16.
Hague kept SDSU close with a string of kills, helping the Aztecs pull even again at 20. But LBSU regained control when Rhiann Sheffie and Hamaker teamed up for a block, and King followed with a solo stuff for a 23-21 lead. San Diego State fended off one set point on a Corfe kill, but King sealed it two rallies later as the Beach closed out the frame.
Long Beach State stormed through the third set with a dominant start and never looked back, rolling past San Diego State 25-11. The Beach opened with a blistering 6-0 run behind the serving of Hamaker, who delivered an ace and sparked a pair of blocks from Elise Agi and Sheffie. Izzy Mahaffey followed with two aces to push the lead to 9-3, and King and Thomas added kills to keep momentum on Long Beach State's side. San Diego State struggled to find rhythm, committing multiple attack errors and service miscues that widened the gap.
The Beach's front line continued to frustrate the Aztecs, with Sheffie and Thomas teaming up for late blocks to extend the advantage to 23-11. Hamaker capped her strong set with a kill before Agi and Maxwell sealed the frame on a block. A final attack error by SDSU ended the set. LBSU pulled away late in the fourth set to secure a 25-21 win and close out the match.
The Beach turned a slim 10-9 lead into a 16-10 cushion behind back-to-back service aces from Hamaker and a series of Aztec attack errors. San Diego State rallied behind Schabort and Mairs, trimming the deficit to 23-20, but a service error gave Long Beach State set point. Maxwell sealed it with a kill off an Agi assist.
