King, Agi Power Long Beach State Past Santa Clara In Four Sets

The duo combine for 32 kills as the Beach rebound from first-set loss to claim Mission Classic victory
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Logan King and Elise Agi each recorded 16 kills as Long Beach State defeated Santa Clara 3-1 at SCU's Mission Classic on Friday night at the Leavey Center.
Cate Shanahan put down six kills in the opening frame, and Santa Clara rallied past Long Beach State 25-22 in the first set. The Beach built a 5-1 cushion behind early kills from King and Anabel Kotzakov, but the Broncos answered with a six-point swing capped by an ace from Ashlynn Reilly to move in front 9-7.
The teams traded points until Shanahan and Selin Aslayan powered a late push that gave Santa Clara set point at 24-20. Long Beach State fought off two set points, but Shanahan sealed it with a kill from setter Macy Hinshaw to give the Broncos the one-set lead.
Long Beach State responded with a dominant second frame, riding the arm of King and steady setting from Madi Maxwell. The Beach surged to a 9-3 lead on three straight Santa Clara attack errors and never looked back. King and Agi combined for key kills down the stretch, and Rhiann Sheffie sealed the 25-19 victory with a kill to square the match at one set apiece.
The Beach went up 2-1 by winning the third set in decisive fashion, pulling away late to defeat Santa Clara 25-18. Long Beach State took control midway through the frame behind freshman outside hitter Sidney Hamaker, who delivered back-to-back kills and an ace to spark a 6-1 run.
Maxwell kept the offense balanced, finding King and Agi in transition, while Nieko Thomas and Sheffie combined for key blocks at the net. Santa Clara stayed within reach early, getting production from Shanahan and Layla Truitt, but could not overcome a string of attack errors. After a Broncos timeout, Long Beach State extended its lead to 23-16 before sealing the set on a block by Sheffie and Agi for the 25-18 win.
Long Beach State weathered an early push from Santa Clara to close out the match with a 25-22 win in the fourth. The Beach shook off back-to-back errors to start the set, then responded with a 6-1 surge capped by kills from Thomas and King for a 7-4 lead.
Hamaker sparked momentum with a kill, block and service ace in succession, helping extend the advantage to 11-7 and forcing a Santa Clara timeout. Agi followed with a service ace and block assist as the Beach rattled off four more points for an 18-13 cushion.
Santa Clara mounted a late push, taking advantage of Beach attack miscues to close within 23-22. But Maxwell answered with a kill to reach set point, and a Bronco setting error sealed the frame 25-22, giving Long Beach State the match.
King hit .400 and earned her first double-double with 10 digs. Agi added nine digs and three blocks. Hamaker hit a team-high .455 as she tallied 11 kills (11-1-22). Maxwell charted her second double-double with 46 assists and 11 digs. She nearly turned in a triple-double as she also registered eight blocks. Thomas posted 10 blocks and five kills. Libero Anna Jelinek had 11 digs. Shanahan paced the Broncos with 18 kills. Long Beach State outhit Santa Clara (1-3) .271 to .181.
