Long Beach State has won two straight tournaments to start the season.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State Men's Golf has won each of their first two tournaments to start the season, and will try for a historic third while competing at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational for the first time beginning on Monday, September 29.
Ranked No. 30 in the Golfweek preseason poll, Long Beach State has been on a tear after winning both the Ram Masters Invitational and the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, and will now face off with another big field at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational.
The field will consist of 19 teams, with Colorado hosting Arkansas State, Boise State, Creighton, Cal State Fullerton, Denver, Eastern Washington, Gonzaga, Loyola Marymount, Northern Colorado, Sacramento State, Southern Illinois, Tarleton State, UTEP, Texas State, UC Irvine, Utah State and Wyoming along with the Beach.
Alejando de Castro Piera will again lead the lineup for Long Beach State. The senior was the top finisher for Long Beach State in their last trip to Colorado for the Ram Masters Invitational, placing third overall to start the season. That was the fourth Top 5 finish of his career at Long Beach State as the senior continues to make a strong case after ranking in the individual Top 100 last season.
Junior Krishnav Chopraa will play second for LBSU. The 2025 Big West Individual Medalist has put up two straight Top 20 performances, highlighting his increased consistency through the fall. Jaden Huggins is coming off of one of hist best performances as Long Beach State, placing in a tie for fourth place overall to share the team lead at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate to help lead the Beach to a win in New Mexico.
He shared that spot in Albuquerque with senior Jack Cantlay who will play fourth for the Beach this coming week who boasts a Top 20 and a Top 5 finish this season. That's matched by the fifth player in the lineup for Long Beach State, Steen Zeman, who tied for 11th overall at 5-under par in New Mexico after a Top 5 finish to begin the year as an individual at the Ram Masters Classic.
In a unique format, Colorado will also host the Les Fowler Individual Invitational, which will have at least 35 individuals competing on a different course, the Broadlands Golf Course in Broomfield, Colo. rather than on the Colorado National Golf Club with the teams.
The Beach will have three players participating in that format, as Tiger Tahvildari will repeat as an individual after a three-over par 219 at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, while Steven Deutsch will make his season debut, competing for the first time since the 2022-23 season for the Beach. Norwin Gohm, who made his season debut for the Beach at the Ram Masters Invitational in a tie for 32nd will also be competing in that event.
Live scoring for the team competition will be found at https://scoreboard.clippd.com/tournaments/238697/scoring/team while the scoring for the individuals will be at https://scoreboard.clippd.com/tournaments/238698/scoring/player.
