Long Beach State broke both the single-round and 36-hole team records with a spectacular day at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational.

ERIE, Colo. – Long Beach State Men's Golf set a pair of team records, closing the opening day of the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational in the lead after two rounds from the Colorado National Golf Club.

Day One Results

All five players for No. 30 Men's Golf ended the day in the Top 20 after a phenomenal second round from the team. Long Beach State finished 20-under par in the second round with a score of 276, the best team round in program history and combined with a 12-under par first round, the program's best-ever 36-hole score as a team.

The Beach put themselves in a good position after the opening round with a first-round 276 on the Par 72 course, 12-under par following five-under par rounds from both graduate Steen Zeman and junior Alejandro de Castro Piera, while Jack Cantlay and Krishnav Chopraa also both finished under par in the first with a pair of one-under par 71s.

Zeman kept rolling after his strong start, leading from the front with a 7-under par 65, his best collegiate round to move into sole possession of second place at 12-under par. Jaden Huggins shot a 5-under par 67 to slide into a tie for 20th place, while de Castro ended the day tied for fourth after a second-round 68.

That 68 was matched by both Chopraa and Cantlay, who remained deadlocked in a tie for 14th place overall in the 100-golfer field after two rounds at 5-under par.

Long Beach State has put themselves in position to chase more history on Tuesday. The Beach leads Arkansas State by one stroke and the hosts Colorado by four entering the final day. Rob Murray's squad has won both of their first two tournaments this season, and would be the first in program history to win three straight if the team can finish things off with the final round on Tuesday.

The team's three individuals were taking part in a separate competition, the Les Fowler Colorado Invitational held at Broadlands Golf Course in Broomfield, Colo. Junior Tiger Tahvildari finds himself among the leaders after a 71-70 start to the tournament, finishing three-under par, while both Norwin Gohm and Steven Deutsch shot a pair of 72s to end the day at even par.
